COALITION OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES HAILS PROGRESS IN CHINA SERVICES TRADE TALKS, LOOKS FORWARD TO GETTING IMPROVED MARKET ACCESS IN CONTINUED NEGOTIATIONS

Washington, DC, Friday, April 9, 1999 — Dean R. O'Hare, Chairman of the Coalition of Service Industries (CSI) and Chairman and CEO of The Chubb Corporation, said today that CSI welcomed the US Administration's announcement yesterday of progress in expanding market access in China.

"Substantial progress has been made during the last several weeks in securing China's agreement to meaningful liberalization in several important service sectors, " O'Hare said. "The ongoing negotiations will give more time to obtain better offers in sectors like banking and securities and improvement in other areas. We look forward to working with the Administration to achieve these improvements quickly, to obtain bipartisan Congressional approval of permanent Normal Trade Relations with China, and to secure our companies' access to this important market."
